Caccamo – Where Sicily’s Medieval Story Comes to Life

During one of my travels, I stumbled across a small Sicilian town called Caccamo and instantly fell head over heels—think of a real-life “Under the Tuscan Sun” moment! Before I knew it, I’d bought a cozy townhouse with jaw-dropping views. Oh, and did I mention there’s an actual medieval castle at the entrance to this magical place?

Caccamo, a Norman town established in 1903, is perfectly tucked about 45 minutes between Palermo and Cefalù, and just 15 minutes from Termini Imerese. The showstopper here is the 11th-century Norman castle perched high on a giant rock—one of the best-preserved in all of Sicily and Italy. Around town, you’ll spot Greco-Byzantine and Gothic details woven into the architecture. At Piazza Duomo, the Baroque cathedral dedicated to St. George adds a touch of grandeur. Local agriculture thrives, with almonds, grains, meat, cheeses, and olives lending authentic Sicilian flavors to every meal.

With a friendly population of about 8,200, Caccamo’s residents are welcoming, often chatting happily even if you have to rely on a bit of pantomime. You’ll find English-speaking expats from all over the world here, and plenty of cafés (bars) and restaurants serving the mouthwatering local foods and desserts that Sicily is famous for. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, savor each moment, and truly feel at home.
